Why don't more people LS swap the 924/944 instead of RX-7s/8s?! I mean, this has a property crap engine (utterly unreliable, not a rotary, pretty generic 4 banger) and a fantastic chassis. I approve.

People should do rotary swaps into them. Don't know how heavy an LS is(they are pretty small) but they can't be heavier than a 2 or maybe 3 rotor engine, can it?

I have never wanted a 944 more.

I'd love to see a proper Porsche enthusiast's reaction to seeing a 944 drive by sounding like it's gargling thunder.

Rotaries are quite light. I think I've heard a LS is maybe a hundred pounds heavier.

Source: I've lifted many a remanufactured RX8 engine, and if I can deadlift them, they're not that bad.

I always thought of LS motors as sounding like they are shitting dragons.

That's a good one. I'll use it next time I hear my friend's 05 CTS-V.

Well, that partially explains why there are so many rotary powered cars to swap engines into...

The LS is only about 20lbs heavier than the 2.5L motor, so the difference is a bit less when you're swapping out a turbo motor, which you should do since you'll want all the extra bits on the turbo car (bigger brakes, LSD, final drive). The big problem with LS swaps into the 944 is you need to keep the transaxle, which isn't built for that kind of torque. A rebuild is necessary to make sure everything is tight, and you don't want a hopped up LS in there, otherwise you'll be grenading your transaxle once a week.

While I agree that a 924/944 with an LS motor is an amazing combination and there should be more swaps, you are only fooling yourself with your claims that a 13B-REW/20B/Renesis is more reliable than a M44...

I don't always put fender flares on my car...

Kinja'd!!!

But when I do, I put flares on top of flares, for truly wide tire fitments.

Why not just buy a C5 Corvette? It can't be much more expensive for a used C5 than to do a chevy engine swap into a 30 year old transaxle Porsche.

It is lighter, lower center of gravity with a composite body without additional seats.

It already has an LS engine, and a transaxle, and parts are probably less scarce than a 30 year old Porsche, let alone getting those to work with an engine designed for a different system, and a heck of a lot more torque than stock.

those guys lose their poo over stuff like this. though, the 944 has fewer champions, to be sure. I swapped a 350 into a 914 many years ago and I used to love the strokes inflicted on porschephiles by my car's sound.

That's fantastic. I owned a perfectly unreliable 951 (944 Turbo) and while the turbo kick was intoxicating, the $2000 water pump was less so. I would have happily tossed a V8 in there. Great looking car.

You are a daredevil, my friend. Sticking a heavy V8 behind you in a tiny car like a 914? Crazy, but crazy awesome as well.

I had a friend in high school that put a 350 into a 928. When I asked him if he could do the same for a 944, I think he told me there wasn't room. 20 years later I find out that was a lie..... Sounds like I have something to do to when my 4cyl gives out, that and swap out the slushbox my wife had to have.

It does seem like the V8-swapped 944s break about as often as the stock I4s, at least in LeMons/Chump racing, so there's that.

The Mazderp is probably just a tad more reliable.

...you're looking at $6,000+ to fix a ~$7,500 car with the same motor that just failed prematurely. Sounds like a perfect swap candidate.

Nah, it's closer to $4500 I think. That might be warranty price though. But running, it's hard to find a RX-8 under $10k unless its got other issues*. Not that I've found, anyways.

http://www.atkinsrotary.com/index.php?pag=…

So $5100 for the rebuild, plus shipping both ways, plus 8 hours shop time to do the swap = about $6,000. Now, obviously you can use a junkyard motor of questionable condition and do the swap yourself for ~$2,500k easily if you are mechanically inclined and patient enough to get a good deal on a junkyard motor. But we're trying to justify swapping an LS motor - not band-aid it long enough to sell the car - so of course we're going to make the rotary option look more expensive in order to make the swap seem financially responsible. :)

And recently there was an RX-8 on craigslist locally for the low, low price of $3,000. Any guesses what it needed?
